BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Many school districts across Massachusetts cancelled school Thursday because of a winter storm, leading to some differing opinions amongst residents as to whether that was the best move.

Some folks from Salem and Lynn thought that the early closures were a good idea.

“I think it’s good because of the timing of the storm, [and] with traffic on the roads [with] buses and kids etc., so I think it’s a good call,” said Chris from Salem.

“It’s probably a good thing [because] it’s supposed to be icy,” said another.

Not everybody agreed that cancelling school was the right thing to do, however.

“Sometimes, I don’t believe what’s coming, because it’s the weather!” one woman laughed.

“Just look at the previous storms we’ve had, it was enough to cancel school, and they canceled school anyways,” another man added. “And then you get nothing!”

Heavy snow and ice created slippery conditions on roadways throughout the state. Snow changed to rain in the afternoon on Thursday. The National Weather Service said by 1 p.m., less than an inch of snow accumulated in Boston.
