EVERETT, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some Market Basket customers are concerned after dozens of employees were suspended at the location in New Bedford, Mass.

According to the New Bedford Light, a lack of proper documentation is the reason for the suspension of 47 employees at the store, who are reportedly undocumented immigrants. This came after a federal investigation that dates back to 2023.

Some customers at the Market Basket in Everett, Mass., disagreed with the targeting of workers.

“I am on the side of the people that come here who work and want to go through on life,” said a customer. “I was undocumented for a while. That’s one way of the American way, so that’s what I think about it.”

“I think everybody should have an opportunity to make a living, and if they can’t make a living where they originated from, they should be able to make it here,” said another customer. “I just think they should make the process of getting a Social Security number easier and make them pay taxes.”

Market Basket CEO Arthur T. Demoulas and several executives were recently placed on leave over allegations of planning a work stoppage. Longtime executives Joe Schmidt and Tom Gordon were fired in July 2025 over the Market Basket Board of Directors’ accusations, which both denied.

WBZ NewsRadio has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security and Market Basket for comment, but has not heard back as of Monday morning.
