Martha's Vineyard Bank Hit By Rare Armed Robbery

TISBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Police in the town of Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard are searching for suspects in a rare bank robbery on the island.

Police say the robbery happened at the Vineyard Haven branch of Rockland Trust Bank, and that the suspects were armed with guns.

There were three suspects, who got away in a stolen car which was later ditched by the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest according to the Vineyard Gazette.

Martha's Vineyard Regional High School said it was still having classes as normal, but that students and teachers were sheltering in place. No one was being allowed in or out of the building as of 10:00 AM, and district officials said they would not be dismissing students until they have "assurances that the environment is safe."

The only way on or off the island is by boat or plane.

The Steamship Authority runs most daily ferries to Martha's Vineyard, and confirmed it had not been asked to stop service to or from the island as of late Thursday morning.
