BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell announced on Tuesday that her office is joining national antitrust legal action against JetBlue Airways Corporation and its pending acquisition of Spirit Airlines— the "largest ultra-low-cost carrier" in the United States.

The complaint filed in a federal district court in Boston aims to keep JetBlue from acquiring Spirit permanently, as officials argue the latter airline offers competitive and cheaper flights from Boston Logan Airport and Bradley International Airport in Springfield to popular destinations. Because JetBlue considers Boston one of its "focus cities," Attorney General Campbell asserted the acquisition would particularly hurt Massachusetts passengers looking to cut down on flight costs.

“When airlines compete on price, quality and innovative services, consumers benefit. Consumers should have a wide range of affordable air travel options, which is why my office is proud to step up and advocate for consumers and push the court to stop this anticompetitive deal between JetBlue and Spirit Airlines," AG Campbell said.
