BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) —The MSPCA-Angell announced Feb. 16 it took on 28 dogs from a Fla. shelter as part of a nationwide effort to combat canine homelessness.

Salem's MSPCA-Angell Northeast shelter will receive 15 of the dogs.

The relocation manager at that shelter told WBZ NewsRadio's Kendall Buhl the goal is for the dogs to "get adopted in a flash."

All of the dogs are from Miami-Dade Animal Services.

That shelter only has the capacity to house about 350 dogs, but it is currently caring for more than 650 dogs, according to the MSPCA-Angell.

A report by animal shelter data organization Shelter Animal Counts showed canine homelessness extended across the United States in 2023.

Last year, 3.2 million dogs entered shelters and rescues nationwide, according to the report. That marked a 3.2 percent increase from 2022.

Of those, 359,000 were euthanized.

The MSPCA-Angell is waiving its adoption fees from Feb. 19 until Feb. 25.
