WINTHROP, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — There has been a mass casualty in Winthrop after a man allegedly stole a truck and crashed it into a building.

Three people are reported dead, one of them being the suspected gunman that was shot by the police.

The incident took place at about 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, between Shirley St. and Veterans Rd.

"Preliminary investigation suggests a male suspect stole a truck owned by a plumbing and drain company and then crashed into a building on Veterans Road in Winthrop," Massachusetts State Police Media Communications Director Dave Procopio stated.

At some point after fleeing the crashed vehicle, the suspect is believed to have shot at a female bystander and a male.

Multiple neighbors told WBZ NewsRadio that the male victim who came out to investigate the scene and was shot was a retired state trooper.

One police officer was taken to an area hospital for an evaluation but was not seriously injured.

Winthrop Police are urging motorists and pedestrians to avoid Neptune Avenue, Cross Street and Veterans Road between Beach and Washington.

They said there is no active danger to the public.

Massachusetts State Police have identified one of the victims as retired MSP Trooper David L. Green who was murdered outside his Beach Road home. Green had served 36 years in law enforcement and retired on Dec. 31, 2016.

Colonel Christopher Mason, superintendent of Massachusetts State Police, said Green was widely respected and well-liked by his fellow troopers and "more than upheld the ideals of integrity, professionalism and service to others."
