ALLSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mass. DCR is conducting some new experiments along Storrow Drive to reduce the number of “storrowing” incidents that have occurred on the roadways recently.

“Storrowing” is a term used to describe incidents in which truck drivers on Storrow Drive attempt to pass under a clearance that is not designed for the vehicle they are operating, which usually results in a collision that causes a major backup on the roadways.

To further avoid the “Storrowing” issue on the roadways, Mass DCR has installed a series of new signs on Memorial Drive, Soldiers Field Road, and Storrow Drive after an initial sign reading “Cars Only” was installed on Storrow last summer. DCR Digital Strategist Ryan Hunton said that four additional signs were going up, two on Soldiers Field Road by the North Harvard Street Bridge, and two on Memorial Drive and Wadsworth Street.

“So hopefully they will alert the drivers of oversized vehicles much better, and our traffic engineers are going to spend the summer observing these additional pilot program signs,” Hunton said.

If all goes well, the plan is to add new signs to all 28 on-ramps on Soldiers Field Rd, Memorial Dr, and Storrow Dr.
