STONEHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation has made the popular activity of leaf peeping a little bit easier with a new interactive fall foliage map.
The online map allows visitors to plan their foliage viewing based on the specific period of change the leaves are in at that time and location.
“The different parts of Massachusetts are so different, that map can show us where you want to see the best colors,” said Frannie Macone, a Stoneham resident.
“I think a lot of people from around the country like to come to this area to look at foliage, “said Drew, a Boston resident. “I think this is really innovative [and] a great idea.”
In addition to the map showing what stage of change the leaves are in, it will also show whether the leaves in the area are at “mid-point, ““near peak,” “peak, “or “past peak.”
“We were just talking to our kids over text today about looking for fall colors up in New Hampshire, so I’ll have to tell them about this, “added Frannie.
“We don’t want this getting out too much, we want to keep this quiet,” joked Bill Macone, a Stoneham resident.
According to the DCR, the fall foliage webpage highlights 17 recommended foliage viewing spots in the state park system.
The foliage map spans the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is updated every week.
