BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will not allow some prop bets during Sunday's Super Bowl LVIII.

Prop bets are side wagers during a sports game or event that generally have no bearing on the final outcome. They can include how many strikeouts a pitcher throws during a baseball game, how many assists a player has during a basketball game, or whether or not someone will score during the first ten minutes of a hockey game.

On Wednesday, a motion to allow prop bets on the coin toss result, coin toss winner, and coin toss winner to win the Super Bowl was not approved; the commission voted 3-2 against.

The discussion was spurred after online sportsbook FanDuel requested clarification on whether the bets were allowed in Massachusetts.

The commission then unanimously agreed that the following prop bets were also not allowed for Sunday's big game because they were not part of the state's existing sports betting catalogue:

  • Team to receive opening kickoff
  • Coin toss to be re-taken
  • Coin toss call result
  • Gatorade color poured over winning team's coach
  • National Anthem length

Commissioners said they were open to reviewing the prop bets in the future.
