BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts State Lottery has officially launched its most expensive scratch-off ticket.

The new ticket, called the Billion Dollar Extravaganza, costs $50 and offers up to $1 billion in prizes, including a $25 million jackpot, which is the largest instant win prize in Mass Lottery history. The ticket features three $25 million prizes, five $2 million prizes, and 15 $1 million prizes.

Mass Lottery said the odds of winning any sort of prize from the new catch ticket are about 1 in 4.10. Even with those odds, the WBZ's James Rojas did not find many people that would be open to shelling out that kind of cash for a scratch-off.

"I'd rather use that money for something more important," he said. "You're never going to win."

Some lottery players said they would rather spend the $50 on other scratch tickets or buy tickets for games like Powerball and Mega Millions.

"There are other ways to gamble," one shopper said. "You can do a lot more with $50."

One person said he'd rather bet that money on the Super Bowl, which is now legal in Massachusetts after in-person sports betting launched in January.

"I'd bet $50 on Philidelphia to win the Super Bowl," he said.

WBZ's James Rojas (@JamesRojasNews) reports.
