Mass. Passes 50,000 Coronavirus Cases, 2,500 Deaths

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Since the first case was reported on Feb 1, there have now been more than 50,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Massachusetts.

On Friday, the state Department of Public Health reported almost 5,000 new confirmed cases and 196 additional deaths attribute to the virus.

That brings the state's total number of COVID-19 cases to 50,969, and the total number of deaths to 2,556 over a period of 12 weeks. About 55 percent of COVID-related deaths in Massachusetts have been reported at the state's long-term care facilities.

More than 22 percent of Massachusetts' cases are located in Middlesex County, which also has the 14th highest rate of cases in the nation, according to Johns Hopkins University.
