HOPKINTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The westbound side of the Mass Pike was closed at the I-495 interchange in Hopkinton for emergency repairs Friday.
Traffic was being detoured off the Mass Pike onto Route 9 at Exit 111 in Framingham.
MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said at a press conference that a worker noticed a crack in the road at around 7:00 a.m. Friday morning.
An inspector determined there was road settlement happening because of nearby construction, which ran the risk of a major sinkhole opening up, Gulliver said.
Gulliver said one lane on the highway was expected to reopen Friday afternoon as crews continue to make repairs, but the highway may not fully reopen until 8 p.m.
Drivers heading westbound on the Mass Pike should expect delays and are encourage to find an alternate route.
This is an ongoing story.
