BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) and Rep. Suzane DelBene (D-Wash.) filed a $205 billion bill Monday to fund a national high-speed rail system.

In a press release, Moulton called high-speed rail a faster, cleaner, safer and more economical transportation option.

"It will connect people to more jobs in new places, give Americans freedom and choice in how they travel, and put us on par with the rest of the world," Moulton said. "This bill is the plan that will get us there.”

He said a nationwide high-speed rail system would create "at least" 2.6 million jobs by 2029.

Japan, China and countries across Europe already have high-speed rail networks. Some high-speed trains travel faster than 200 miles per hour, according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation approved $2.5 billion in private activity bonds for the Brightline West high-speed rail project.

Trains on the new electric railway will travel more than 186 mph between Nevada and California, according to the DOT.
