BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — With the moratorium on student loans ending on August 31, Massachusetts officials asked for President Joe Biden to cancel all student debt at a Dorchester, Boston Teachers Union event on Wednesday.

Senator Elizabeth Warren was one of those officials who made the request.

"It is powerfully important for how we build a future, it is important for racial equity, important for gender equity, important for generational equity," Warren said.

Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley had similar sentiments, sharing her experience with debt within the United States system.

"So I did take out those loans, I did default on those loans, and I thought quite poorly of myself because I didn't understand how despite the fact I was working sometimes three jobs— that I could not get ahead," Pressley said.

Warren and Pressley also spoke on the recent incidents on Boston's transit system the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.

"I'm saying we need new leadership, the T has had a monumental failure, not just in the past few weeks or even the past few months— this is year, after year, after year," Warren said.

"We have failed riders, so if we are going to fail riders and their lives are going to be disrupted to this extent, the very least we can do is pick up the tab," Pressley said.
