BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts residents bet big on sports last month.

According to a new revenue report from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission issued Tuesday, retail and online sports betting businesses took in more than $568 million in wagers in March.

The vast majority of those wagers were placed with online operations such as DraftKings, FanDuel, and four other authorized sportsbooks, who collectively took in $548 million. DraftKings reported the highest amount of online wagers, $257.6 million, while FanDuel came in second with $181 million.

The report said that the licensees made more than $48 million in revenue, while the state collected more than $9 million in taxes.

In-person legalized sports gambling in Massachusetts began at the end of January at the state's three casinos — Encore Boston Harbor in Everett, Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, and MGM Springfield.

Mobile sports betting started on March 10, the same month as the NCAA March Madness tournament. The annual basketball competition was considered a major boost for gambling revenues during the previous month.
