Mass. State Police Identify 19-Year-Old Who Drowned In Hyde Park Pond

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts State Police have identified the person who drowned in Hyde Park's Turtle Pond Thursday as 19-year-old Jason Peri Bonilla, of Roxbury.

Bonilla’s body was pulled from the water around 7:45 p.m. Thursday.

Earlier in the afternoon, he went to the pond with several of his friends and decided to swim. Police said Bonilla was a good swimmer, but he may have used marijuana before swimming.

Bonilla and one of his friends decided to swim across the pond to another dock. When he was about halfway across, around 4:45 p.m., Bonilla began to struggle. His friend tried to help him but wasn’t able to keep him above water.

Authorities searched for him for about three hours.

Bonilla was living in Boston with friends. His immediate family lives in Honduras.
