BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Massachusetts State Representative has thrown her hat into the ring to become the state's next Lieutenant Governor.
Dr. Tami Gouveia, who has been representing the 14th Middlesex District since 2018, made the announcement in a tweet on Monday with a campaign video.
Gouveia, who originally grew up in Lowell, said that social services from her community and state helped her family enter the middle class when she was growing up.
"Too many people still lack the protections that helped my family," she said. "We deserve more from the corner office."
The Boston University graduate cited the opioid crisis, racial disparities in healthcare, the climate crisis, women's rights and more as some of the issues included in her platform.
"While the [Covid-19] pandemic did compound these failures, it did not invent them," she said. "When I was a kid, my community and our government had our back -- and I'm running for Lieutenant Governor to make sure we have yours."
As the 2022 race begins to take shape, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito have not yet announced if they will seek re-election.
