BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Out of the 32 students chosen to receive the Rhodes Scholarship for 2023, two are from Massachusetts and more are from greater New England. More than 2,500 students applied to the program this year.
Tessa Haining of Newton is a senior at Harvard University, where she's completing dual majors in chemistry and comparative literature. Haining is on the Varsity Heavyweight Rowing Team and practices the violin.
Issac Robinson of Milton also attends Harvard as a senior this year, majoring in Computer Science and Mathematics. Robinson has done research or interned at the National Institutes of Health, Jane Street, Meta, and the Beijing Genomics Institute.

Three students attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology also qualified for the program, six students at Harvard (including Haining and Robinson) made the list.
The scholarship from Rhodes Trust funds student expenses for two to three years of study at Oxford University— averaging out to $75,000 covered per year. The Rhode Trust was founded by the late Cecil Rhodes, a founder of the diamond mining and manufacturing company De Beers.
The group will begin graduate degree studies at Oxford University in October.
