BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts voters make it clear that they do not want to see psychedelic drugs in a similar category as weed or alcohol.

Question 4 on the Massachusetts ballot asked voters to consider legalizing some naturally occurring psychedelic drugs for medicinal and recreational use. The substances included psilocybin, psilocyn, ibogaine, mescaline and dimethyltryptamine (DMT).

With a majority of voters voting no, the measure was rejected.

If it had passed, anyone over 21 years old would have been able to grow, share and use those substances at home. It also would have paved the way for licensed professionals to sell the drugs at supervised facilities.

Since voters said no, there are no changes to the current laws on these Class C controlled substances. Anyone who possesses, distributes, or uses these psychedelics could face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
