BOSTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A line in the sand has been drawn, Commonwealth Wind has until Wednesday to decide whether they'll move forward with their offshore wind project under the agreed upon contract or request state regulators to put off the prior agreements.
Avangrid Renewables recently said they would be unable to proceed with the current contract on their 1,200 megawatt Commonwealth Wind project because supply chain issues, inflating prices, and sharpened interest rates made it unviable. The company asked state regulators to pause the contract for a month, with backing from another developer, Mayflower Wind, to do so.
State regulators say the companies' request for renegotiation of the power purchase agreements filed with the Department of Public Utilities is a last minute maneuver. Further, the utilities companies involved in the deal have expressed no interest in rejoining developers at the negotiating table, causing the DPU to issue that Wednesday deadline.
Though Mayflower Wind has since withdrawn their motion for a one-month suspension, committing to move ahead with its South Coast offshore wind project.
"Mayflower Wind is committed to meeting its contractual obligations to supply clean offshore wind power to the people of Massachusetts. We are proud of our role in meeting critical economic, climate and energy security needs and believe that working together with the utility companies and the Commonwealth we can collaboratively and successfully address and overcome the current extraordinary economic challenges," Mayflower CEO Francis Slingsby said.

Officials say the delay could end up pushing the project's launch date months.
