WBZ NewsRadio spoke with Jake Wark, spokesperson for the Department of Fire Services at their headquarters in Stow.
“More of [college campus fires] take place in September than any other month,” said Wark.
Fire risk is at an increase in September on college campuses because of unattended cooking.
Wark said that there is an effective way of getting the kitchen back under control if you accidentally start a fire.
“Slide a lid over the fire, and turn off the heat,” he said.
He added that students should make sure that their new housing has proper fire prevention equipment such as updated smoke alarms and at least two exits.
