BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new survey on taxes confirms what most Massachusetts homeowners already know... they pay among the highest real estate taxes in the country.

The flip side of that issue is median home values are up in the state.

Rounding out the nation's top five real estate taxpayers starting at the highest rate are: New Jersey, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, and Massachusetts.

This resident said she feels badly for some of her kids who as adults weren't able to afford staying and living in Massachusetts. "I'm sad my children aren't able to live in this area," she said. "They've moved to other states."

She added the high cost of living in Massachusetts is also driving out older residents. "I've watched it run a lot of older, elderly people out of town. It's a shame."

She said she paid eight-plus thousand a year in Massachusetts real estate taxes last year which is above the average of $5.6 thousand a year.
