BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Recent data shows that Massachusetts has more cases of the P.1 variant, first identified in Brazil, than anywhere else in the country.
According to the CDC, the state has reported 58 cases of the Brazil variant.
The number of cases appears to be linked to an outbreak on Cape Cod. The Cape Cod Times reported last week that 50 cases of the P.1 variant were in Barnstable County.
Florida is the state with the second highest number of cases of the Brazil variant. The CDC has reported it has 55 cases of the P.1 variant.
The CDC also reports Massachusetts has 712 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant, originally detected in the U.K., and 12 cases of the B.1.351 variant, originally detected in South Africa.
