Massachusetts Nears 55,000 Cases Of Coronavirus

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported another 1,590 confirmed cases of coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the state's total number of cases to just under 55,000.

While the number of tests conducted and confirmed cases has decreased over the past four days, Sunday marks the 18th day in a row where the state has reported more than 100 deaths attributed to the virus.

Over 10,000 confirmed cases have been detected at hundreds of long-term care facilities statewide. Around 56 percent of the COVID-related deaths in Massachusetts were also reported at those facilities.

While the virus is most fatal among seniors, younger people are also getting sick. According to the state DPH, there are currently 12 suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients hospitalized at Boston Children's Hospital, five of whom are in the ICU.

There are also 468 employees of the Beth Israel Lahey Health System currently in quarantine with confirmed cases of coronavirus. That includes non-patient facing staff.
