BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The polls have closed in Massachusetts.

The official closing time was 8 o'clock, but any voters in line at that time were still allowed to vote.

The Secretary of State's Office said turnout on this election day was heavy.

Long lines were reported at some Boston polling locations, while several reported running short on ballots.

Election officials said police escorts with lights and sirens delivered extra ballots to locations that included Roslindale, Hyde Park, and West Roxbury.

The City of Boston released a statement on the reported shortages: "We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion and are grateful for the diligent efforts of poll workers throughout the city to ensure that every voter can exercise their right to vote."
