BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and a new report published today says Massachusetts is at the front of the class, ranking #1 for its screening, early diagnosis, and surgical treatment rates for lung cancer.

The American Lung Association published "State of Lung Cancer 2023", and it reveals that the state is the best place to be for patients who are being treated for the disease.

In addition, Massachusetts ranks #2 in the nation in the “lack of treatment” category, which means more than 86% of its lung cancer cases do receive treatment following diagnosis.

States at the bottom of that category, such as New Mexico and Arizona, have less than 70% of lung cancer cases after diagnosis receive treatment.

Despite Massachusetts' success rate in diagnosing and treating lung cancer, the disease remains the state's leading cause of cancer deaths.
