BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts transportation organizations began to prepare for Thanksgiving travel a week before the holiday.
Richard Davey, the executive director of Massport, said that the travel rush tends to start the Friday before Thanksgiving.
“Here at Logan Airport we're going to see we expect almost 1.2 million people to come through the airport starting this Friday through the Monday after Thanksgiving,” said Davey.
Regardless of the choice of transportation, travel for the holidays may surpass pre-pandemic levels.
MassDot Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver predicted that the roads will be packed at the very beginning of next week.
“We expect that Monday starting as early as 2:00 p.m. you’ll start seeing much more heavy traffic than usual that will peak on Tuesday and Wednesday,” said Gulliver. “Tuesday has been a much busier day than has been typical in prior years and we expect that to be again this year as well.”
And with all the hustle and bustle that comes with holiday travel, MassDot Secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt asked for people leave early, be patient and be careful.
“Whether you're traveling on the T, whether you’re on our roads, whether you’re in the skies, please leave early,” said Tibbits-Nutt. “Please, on our roadways slow down, please make sure you're putting your phones down. Make sure that you are also wearing your seatbelts and please take your time getting to the places you need to go.”
