HINGHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A pesky sea scavenger has been creating havoc with people's food up and down the coast.
Marauding seagulls have already caused Sullivan's in South Boston to close its outdoor dining. And now some food establishments in Hingham have followed suit after customers say seagulls have gotten seemingly braver than ever before and in some cases are literally snatching food right out of people's hands. "Bold," said one diner. "I've never seen birds so bold."
Meanwhile, Kaitlyn from Hingham said what the seagulls are doing is definitely not cute. "I'm really mad about it," she said. "I don't understand why the seagulls feel they can take everybody else's paid-for food." Her anger is understandable, especially with seafood prices so high. Hopefully, Kaitlyn doesn't let her anger translate to going after the seagull. In spite of their ubiquitousness, Seagulls are protected throughout the U.S. under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.
Also, bird experts say the term 'bird-brained' is a misnomer as birds, including seagulls, are intelligent animals. And while seagulls don't have the best sense of smell, they do have excellent eyesight and can spot your clam roll from far away.
