BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – Massachusetts State Police added two new horses to their Mounted Unit in April.

Officers brought the horses, NASA and Nolan, back from Asbury University's Equine Studies program in Wilmore, Kentucky.

"Upon meeting our newest horses, it was immediately apparent to our Mounted Unit Troopers that the students did an outstanding job caring for these beautiful animals and training them to be police horses," the department said in a press release.

The horses have spent several days training since arriving in Massachusetts.

Troopers taught them how to mount trailers, ran them through various exercises and fitted them for saddles, according to the press release.

The department will train them outside at Walden Pond before using them in the field.
