MILTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The town of Milton faced more backlash on Tuesday after voting against a rezoning plan that would have brought it into compliance with a state housing law.

Attorney General Andrea Campbell announced her office is suing the town for failing to comply with the MBTA Communities Law. The lawsuit asked the court to order Milton to come into compliance with the law that requires municipalities with an MBTA station to have multi-family housing nearby.

Governor Healey showed support for Campbell's lawsuit filed in the Supreme Judicial Court in Suffolk County, saying the law is the only hope to address the Commonwealth's housing affordability crisis.

"The MBTA Communities Act is not optional," Healey said. "It's a good law, it also needs to be enforced and so I strongly support what the attorney general is doing."

Last week, the state revoked a grant that would have provided Milton funding for a seawall project after town residents voted to overturn a multi-family housing district plan that would have put them in compliance with the law.
