WINTHROP, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Each year, a number of states send their 20 best senior girl gymnasts to Ft. Myers Florida for the Senior Showcase Invitational.
Not only did the Massachusetts gymnasts compete at a high level, the girls came in first place.
Peter Gobeil is the owner of the Winthrop Gymnastics Academy and one of the coaches on the national team since 2004.
Gobeil said the level of competition at the invitational was high. "Very, very competitive," he said. "But the Mass. girls, they were on."
Gobeil said the girls on the team are used to playing against one another, but this tournament was an opportunity for them to play together as a team. "These girts have been competing against each other for the most part for years. And now all of a sudden we put 20 of them in a circle and they bonded very quickly."
The invitational was held last weekend and was sponsored by the National High School Gymnastics Association.
Massachusetts took home top honors, while New York came in second place, followed by third place New Jersey.
