Massachusetts Town Named Most Charming In America

STOCKBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — When you picture the quintessential American small-town, you probably imagine a Norman Rockwell painting of sleepy streets and classic cars covered in a soft blanket of snow.

According to Big 7 Travel, that feeling of charm and quaintness captured by Rockwell is exactly what earned Stockbridge the title of the Most Charming Small Town in America 2020.

"Stockbridge looks like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting, and that's because it is!" Big Seven Travel wrote on its list of the nation's top 50 small towns.

"Its charming square, constant community events, historic inns, local eateries and preserved homes make it top the list for America's most charming small towns."

The Berkshire town's reputation as the idyllic New England small-town was cemented decades ago in the work of the prolific Americana artist. Rockwell's namesake museum, which is located in the town just behind the Housatonic River, displays some of those famed paintings of Stockbridge in cozy Christmas scenes.

He lived in the town until he died in 1978. Rockwell's youngest son Peter, who was a sculptor, passed away just last week in Danvers, Massachusetts at the age of 83.

Stockbridge wasn't the only New England location to make it high up on the list of America's most charming towns. In second place is Woodstock, Vermont, with its farm-to-table meals and scenic trails. Sugar Hill, New Hampshire took 4th place with its "stunning fall foliage" and "gorgeous natural beauty." Meredith, New Hampshire came in at number 7, and Mystic, Connecticut placed at number 11.
