BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Ferry service could be expanding to more communities in the Commonwealth.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is considering adding more ferry service to connect the state’s coastal communities to Boston. Currently, there is only year-round ferry service from Charlestown, the Boston Waterfront, Hingham, Hull and Logan Airport.

MassDOT and the MBTA are expected to launch an 18-month study to plan for and design an expanded ferry service that would be fully American Disability Act (ADA) compliant. Gloucester, Salem, Lynn, Winthrop, Quincy, East Boston, South Boston and the North End will all be a part of the study.

“Water transportation is a key part of our network and we understand how providing reliable ferry service is an option that many of our daily riders as well as visitors prefer and enjoy. Continuing to build upon our existing service gives the public improved and viable alternatives for travel today and in the future,” said MBTA CEO Phillip Eng.

WBZ NewsRadio’s James Rojas asked residents about the study and the majority supported MassDOT’s plan.

“Sure, why not? Anything to cut back on the traffic,” said one man. “I think it would be a great idea.”

“If you could go to more places, it would be more convenient,” said one woman.

“It’s the best service that the MBTA operates. It’s completely reliable. It’s pleasant and I would support expanding it as much as makes sense,” said another man.

“The ferry is the way to go now,” said another man.
