CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Boston Museum of Science are working on several proposals that would include a series of boardwalks and bridges that connect Boston and Cambridge for bikers and pedestrians.

While the project is still in the early stages of development, Colleen from East Cambridge thinks it's a great idea for the neighborhood.

"This intersection by the Science Park West End Station doesn't feel very safe," Colleen said. "I think there's actually been some bike casualties over by Museum Way. So yeah, there's a lot of kid-friendly stuff along this strip, but the access to it is really congested and a bit risky."

Designers involved with the feasibility study conducted in December 2023 for the riverwalk wrote that the connection next to the Museum of Science would strengthen the public's relationship to the Charles River, increase safety for the unsafe and uncomfortable bottleneck around the Charles River Dam Road and offer residents and visitors a safe, equitable, and accessible path to travel between the two cities.

"I think it's a great idea to have a better connection between here, where we are by the police station, over to Cambridge," Margo of Cambridge said. "Otherwise, it's really hard to find your way, meander back. And it's not, doesn't feel the safest either."

The project would also provide space for events and outdoor learning exhibits. The preliminary concept for the car-free crossings includes two new bridges and three islands linked by boardwalks. The price tag for the design is an estimated $300 million.

"That sounds like a lot to me, but I'm sure no one's asking me to pay for it directly, but that's a lot of money," Margo stated.
