BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) —   State transportation officials gave an update Thursday on what to expect while traveling for the holidays.

MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver said that they are expecting less traffic congestion next week than during a typical weekday.

“It’s the best possible scenario for everybody. Whether you’re a kid in school, or whether you’re in the transportation industry because it gives people more flexibility in their travel,” he said.

However, Gulliver said that there might be some slight delays on major roads around Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and the day after Christmas.

The state will pause construction work on major roadways Dec. 24-26.

Massport CEO Rich Davey reflected on a record-breaking year, saying Logan Airport saw the most passengers of all time in 2024, and expects that “the holiday season to be no less busy.”

"We ask you to get to the airport a little bit in advance,” Davey said. “We expect some below freezing temperatures as well, so expect that your plane may be de-iced if you’re traveling through Logan.”

Logan Airport has also brought back an old tradition from years prior by offering free gift wrapping on site for last-minute shoppers.

For the week after Christmas, the MBTA said it will offer free train rides after 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
