CHELSEA, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some students were forced to stay home on Monday after a 9-alarm fire in Chelsea.

According to the Chelsea Fire Department, the fire started around 12:30 a.m. at a warehouse on Forbes Street, which they said has been abandoned for over a decade. In a post on X around 3:30 a.m., the Cambridge Fire Department said they sent additional support as a ninth alarm was ordered.

While the fire was mostly contained as of 6:00 a.m. on Monday, its proximity forced Chelsea Superintendent Dr. Almi G. Abeyta to cancel school at the Mary C. Burke Elementary Complex.

“[We] regret to inform you that we must cancel school today at the Sokolowski, Hooks, Kelly and Berkowitz schools. The fire has led to restricted access to the school campus, and our primary concern is the safety of our students, staff, and families,” said Dr. Abeyta in a statement.

The fire also caused a number of road closures and forced the MBTA to suspend service on its Newburyport/Rockport Line early Monday morning. In a post on X, the MBTA said it had shuttle busses in place to transport riders between Chelsea and Lynn.

Road closures and delays are expected throughout Monday, as the fire crews remain on the scene. No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
