BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massport announced a major plan on Friday to transform and electrify Boston’s Flynn Cruiseport.
As cruise season at Boston Harbor ends for this year, Massport CEO Rich Davey unveiled a $100 million plan to fully transform the Cruiseport and focus on an environmentally friendly future.
Massport plans to install two electrical power units that will allow arriving ships to plug into a grid system, instead of idling and relying on diesel when docked in port.
“Massport is announcing that we are going to make a $100 million investment in this facility, including $60 million for ship to shore power,” said Rich Davey, CEO of Massport.
“This is a big upgrade in terms of the way the cruise industry looks at the port of Boston,” said Massachusetts Congressman Stephen Lynch.

The ship to shore power system will help alleviate what was becoming a major pollution problem, as cruise ships have increased in size in recent years.
Lynch added that companies such as Norwegian Cruise Lines are planning to debut new and refined models of their cruise ships which will be enhanced by the existence of ship-to-shore power at ports across the United States.
“We want this to be like “The Jetsons”, we want this to be a space age facility,” joked Lynch.
This announcement comes after what Massport said was a record-breaking cruise season, with close to half a million passengers docking in Boston.
