BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mayor Michelle Wu hosted a celebration on Monday for Bostonians who ran in the Boston Marathon two months ago.

The event was held at the Democracy and Distraction Beer Garden on Boston City Hall Plaza.

Along with sharing drinks and stories with their fellow participants, the top woman, man, nonbinary person and male wheelchair athlete in their respective marathon categories were honored by the mayor and Boston Athletic Association as the fastest individuals in Boston.

Mayor Wu spoke at the event, talking about how inspired she was by each and every athlete that participated in the marathon.

“You inspire me every single day and I’m so thankful for all that you put in to representing our city as you are pushing yourselves and being the embodiment of human spirit and what it means to go your hardest,” Wu said. “To go your hardest, to be a part of a larger mission and connection over so many generations that have run through that tape and really put Boston on the map.”

Steve Genetossio from West Roxbury was one of the runners at the celebration, and he felt it was a great highlight of their achievement.

“I think it’s really cool, I think it’s a great way to celebrate people from the city who ran it,” Genetossio said.

Fadi Kanaan from the South End echoed Genetossio’s thoughts, saying this was a great way to remember Bostonians in context of the global event that is the Boston Marathon.

“Obviously it’s a huge global event so I don’t feel that Bostonians get enough credit for attending this event and participating in it, so it’s really cool,” Kanaan said.
