BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mayor Michelle Wu is declaring Aug. 30 "New Edition Day" in Boston.

“It is an honor to welcome home Roxbury natives New Edition to celebrate their global impact, from our communities here in Boston to the music industry worldwide,” said Mayor Wu in a press release.

Hailing from Roxbury's Orchard Park Project, New Edition has become a legendary staple in the entertainment industry. Founded by Bobby Brown in 1978, the group features Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, and Ralph Tresvant.

The group will return home to participate in a street renaming ceremony followed by a community block party. The ceremony will take place at the corner of Albany Street and Ambrose Street, where the founding members grew up. Wu will rename Dearborn Street, New Edition Way.

“Boston is where it all began for us. This honor means the world to me,” Bobby Brown said in a statement.

For over 40 years, New Edition has paved the way for pop and R&B artists with their style and sound. The group has amassed several awards, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and an induction into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame. But their most coveted accomplishment is the support they continue to receive from their fans, also known as #NE4LIFERS.

“It brings me immense joy to think that future generations of my family, friends, and #NE4Lifers from all over the world will be able to walk and drive down New Edition Way," Ricky Bell said in a statement.
