Mayor Walsh Joins Volunteers Giving Out Turkeys In Dorchester

DORCHESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several volunteers, including Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, were busy handing out free turkeys in Dorchester Saturday morning.

James Morton, President of the YMCA of Greater Boston, stood next to hundreds of Stop & Shop bags full of uncooked Thanksgiving feasts to-go.

"This is the most beautiful morning we've had in five years," he said. "But it's also the most important time that we've been doing this work."

Mayor Marty Walsh joined the group of volunteers outside the Dorchester YMCA handing out the food donation bags.

"We just talked about the increase in need," Walsh said. "I think it's four or five times what it was this time last year."

The need is certainly higher was DuWan Olson, a cook who lives down the block.

"It was my first time, because I'm out of work," Olson said. "Because of Covid, I'm out of work."
