WBZ NewsRadio was there to greet students outside the Joseph Lee School in Dorchester as they arrived alongside Mayor Michelle Wu and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper.
“If you can’t tell, we LOVE the first day of school, there’s nothing like seeing smiles all around,” said Wu.
“The first day is always wonderful to see the enthusiasm [and] the excitement of the students and the parents, they are really eager to get back,” said Skipper.
Among the students who are most eager and excited to head back to the classroom for another year is Darielis, who is starting the eighth grade.
“I feel confident [but] kind of scared because I want to pass [my classes],” she said.
After Mayor Wu welcomed the students, she planned to drop her own kids off for their first day of school.
“You still feel that tug on your heart, that these [children] are the most important thing in the world to you and that you are sending these little people to a different family that is going to care for them just as much,” Wu added.
The news on Wednesday of a school shooting in Georgia that left four dead and injured nine others is fresh on the mayor’s mind. She said it can be a scary time across the country right now but adds that students will be cared for at school just as they are at home.
