BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mayor Michelle Wu held a brunch at the University of Massachusetts Club with a group of first-time home buyers.
Residents used the Boston Home Center, one of the city's financial assistance programs which offers financial help, training, and counseling for first-time homebuyers. It is run by the mayor’s Office of Housing.
The mayor said she was very excited to share in this amazing moment for 235 people.
“We have within the last few years permitted more affordable housing than in the last 25 years,” Mayor Wu said. “We're not done but today is a major milestone to be able to celebrate with all of you.”
Ivelisse Minlletty, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, expressed how proud she was to finally be a homeowner.
“This is great, I think after your health, you have to create wealth, and that’s what you do when you invest in a home,” Minlletty said. “It means security for my future.”
Damali Omolade is another new homeowner who said she was still getting used to having a place to call her own.
“I haven't even hit 6 months yet, so it's still like a surreal feeling,” Omolade said. “I'm happy for my kids to be able to inherit something, it means everything, it's part of the American dream.”
So far 678 residents during Wu’s administration have been able to secure housing with the help of the program.
