BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — After months of rain, sleet, and snow, it's finally starting to feel like summer in Boston.

"I think right now, like the temperature yesterday and the day before were perfect — warm but not so much that you're dying, like can't go outside, it's so hot," Jessie of Worcester said.

Bostonians experienced the official first day of summer on Friday as the earth titled closer to the sun, making it the longest day with the shortest night. The event marked the summer solstice and the perfect weather for outdoor activities to begin.

"Summer is just getting started, so I'm sure there will be some camping and road tripping in between," said one resident.

A heat wave is expected to encompass the Bay State this week. The forecasts predict temperatures will surpass 95 degrees with heat index values reaching the triple digits. While some are excited about the warmer weather, others refuse to get their hopes up.

"You never know what's going on here. It's always cold," remarked one skeptical local. "Until it's not for a few days."

Mayor Wu recently announced a heat emergency as the city prepares for the 95-degree heat index for two or more days this week, that is expected to sustain for at least two or more hours per day.

The mayor issued the following heat safety tips:

  • Children and pets should never be left alone in vehicles.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids regardless of activity level.
  • If you can't avoid being outside, take breaks in the shade. Watch for warning signs like dizziness, nausea or confusion.
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion. Heavy sweating, cool and clammy skin, dizziness, nausea, and muscle aches could all be signs of heat exhaustion.
  • Adults and children should use sunscreen containing an SPF-30 or higher and wear protective, loose-fitting clothing including long sleeve shirts and hats.
  • Secure all window air conditioner units.
