BRAINTREE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announces another milestone to speed up the state’s public transportation.
MBTA CEO Phil Eng led the charge for the Track Improvement Program, which ended in December 2024 when the MBTA became slow zone-free for the first time in decades. Thanks to work done during the project, the MBTA announced the Red Line’s Braintree Branch will increase speeds from 40 mph up to 50 mph.
In a statement, Eng said the speed increase “is just the beginning.”
“We are working every day to rebuild and restoring the public’s confidence in the MBTA, and it’s showing us all that when we work together, we can overcome the biggest of challenges,” said Eng in the statement.
Officials did not provide a specific date for the speed increase but said it will happen “within days.” Next, the MBTA hopes to do the same on the Orange Line by bringing speeds up to 55 mph between Oak Grove and Assembly.
