MBTA Begins Two-Month Disruption Of Haverhill Commuter Rail Line

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A 58-day disruption of the MBTA Haverhill Commuter Rail Line for signal system upgrades began Saturday.

Starting Sept. 9 through Nov. 5, shuttle buses will replace regular train service between Reading and Oak Grove stations on the Haverhill Line. These buses will connect to the Orange Line at Oak Grove, where passengers can travel to or from North Station.

Trains will make regular stops between Haverhill and Ballardvale stations, then will be diverted to the Lowell Line via the Wildcat branch, running express between Ballardvale and North Station, except for a stop at Anderson/Woburn where they will connect with shuttle buses serving the stops that are being skipped along the Haverhill Line.

The two-month disruption is to accommodate planned construction related to the implementation of the Automatic Train Control/Positive Train Control safety program. The federally mandated safety program will monitor a train's location, direction, and speed in real time, and aims to reduce speed when needed to help prevent collisions.
