BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It’s anchors up for “Harbor Gem” and “Abigail Adams,” two newest vessels welcomed and christened into the MBTA ferry family Tuesday at Boston’s Long Wharf.

The boats were named by two elementary students as part of a contest hosted by the agency.

Fourth grader Hailey Sommers of Quincy was one of the winners, entering the name “Abigail Adams" after the second First Lady of the United States.

Sommers told WBZ NewsRadio she picked the name because not only was Adams an important figure in American history but also “girls should be treated the way that boys are treated, too.”

That ferry will help commuters travel from Quincy to Boston.

Meanwhile, third grader Onik Hashani of Winthrop picked the name “Harbor Gem,” which will embark from his city to Boston.

MBTA Director of Ferry Operations David Perry said that the two boats came from New York. “They didn’t have a need for them, [but] they’re perfect for us,” he added.

Both kids and their classmates, along with several local leaders, were also on deck for Tuesday's christening ceremony.

“I’ve never did something so cool like this,” Hashani said.
