DORCHESTER, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Planned service changes are underway as phase two of maintenance work on the Red Line resumes.

According to the MBTA, the maintenance work will ensure that the Red Line's infrastructure is in peak operating condition, encompassing inspections, adjustments, and repairs.

Service between Kendall/MIT and JKF/UMass has been replaced with free shuttle buses until Sunday, July 20. The buses will pick up riders at every closed station, except for Park Street. While the repairs are needed to keep the system safe and running smoothly, riders are still frustrated with predicting the best routes for their day.

"So far, it's been a little bit hectic. I've managed to get to work on time, but usually anticipating it is kind of a bit of a concern," one commuter said.

Riders are encouraged to budget an ample amount of time when traveling to their destinations. In addition to the shuttle buses, commuter rail service between Braintree and South Station and Porter and North Station is fare-free.

Bluebike is also providing credits to those who want to utilize the bike lanes in the city. Blue Cross Blue Shield is offering a $20 credit with the code "BLUECROSSMAMBTA2," while the city of Boston is offering five free rides with the code "MBTAREDJULY17."

Although the changes are inconvenient for some, one rider is hopeful that it will all pay off when the work is finally finished.

"It would be really beneficial to try to have some smooth sailing for work and all that stuff."
