BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — As Spring is underway, the MBTA is implementing several upgrades to all modes of transportation as the summer months approach, according to an MBTA press release. The objective of these improvements and repairs is to provide riders with a smoother service experience when choosing the MBTA as a mode of transportation.
Service changes to the Subway already went into effect as of April 7, these improvements include an overall improvement to frequency between trains by about 30 seconds between the Alewife and JFK/UMass sections of the Red Line and by one minute on the Ashmont and Braintree branches of the Red Line. This will result in 24 additional daily trips. The Orange, Blue, and Green Lines will also see similar improvements to service because of changes such as new train cars and the successful addition of MBTA operators.

Similarly, the Commuter Rail will also see service changes go into effect starting May 20. Some of the changes will include an increase in service on the Fairmount Line, with trains running on weekdays and weekends every 30 minutes instead of every 45 minutes. The Worcester Express Train is also returning, with a weekday morning express train running from Worcester to South Station. The CapeFLYER service is also returning, which offers round-trip service between Boston and Cape Cod from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend.
Changes to the MBTA’s bus service went into effect on April 7, and some of the key changes to service include frequency improvements, schedule adjustments, and routing changes to improve reliability and efficiency.
Finally, the MBTA ferry service is expected to begin throughout April and May, most notably the Hingham/Hull Ferry weekend service which will undergo minor schedule adjustments to provide better service to riders, the Lynn Ferry weekday service which will also undergo minor schedule adjustments to improve service for riders. The Winthrop/Quincy Ferry Service will provide increased service between Quincy, Winthrop and the Seaport.
Improvements to the Hingham/Hull, Lynn, and Winthrop/Quincy ferry service will go into effect on April 29.
