MBTA Lifts Final Global Speed Restriction On Green Line

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has lifted the global speed restriction that encompassed the length of the Green Line, though riders should continue to plan for extra commute time.

According to the MBTA, block speed restrictions will remain in place on the Green Line, representing about 18% of track.

"A block speed restriction is a length of track that may include multiple defects that need to be investigated or mitigated," the MBTA said Sunday. "As each defect is validated and corrected as needed, the length of the block speed restriction will be reduced until the block is fully removed."

Block speed restrictions are also in place on the Red, Blue, Orange, and Mattapan lines.

At a press conference Friday, interim MBTA General Manager Jeff Gonneville revealed the reason for the slowdowns was due to discrepancies between MBTA records and third party geometry scans in the documentation of track defects.

"As we go forward, and as we are going through this process, we are ensuring that the information that we are collecting, and that the verification and validation process is precise, and because of that it does take time," Gonneville said.

There is no timetable on when the block speed restrictions will be lifted.
