BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — On Wednesday, the MBTA announced the completion of track work on the Red Line that lifted six speed restrictions between the JFK/UMass and Kendall/MIT stops from August 19 to August 26.

“The infrastructure work accomplished on the Red Line between Kendall/MIT and JFK/UMass stations is another major step towards improving the reliability of the system and travel times for our riders,” said MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng.

The T said among the upgrades, about 9,750 feet of rail, more than 470 ties, and 2,000 feet of signal cable have been removed and reinstalled.

The MBTA said Red Line service was initially expected to resume on August 26, but the suspension was extended an extra day to allow for additional time to complete the work after an incident involving track maintenance vehicles on the Longfellow Bridge.

“This short-term closure now allows us to safely deliver more reliable, more frequent train service longer term, giving people back time in their day,” Eng added.
